Hartfield woodland is a diverse mixed woodland in a semi-rural area of Scotland, located midway between Edinburgh and Glasgow. It has excellent access to public roads, gated vehicular access, and a gravelled parking area for up to two vehicles. The town of Shotts is a short drive away, with plenty of local shops and a variety of restaurants, cafes, and pubs. It also holds its own Highland Games every June.

Hartfield is predominantly forested land, comprising of 5.20Ha of wooded space and 1.78Ha open ground. Within the open areas, left for access to the woodland, are two overhead electricity wayleaves and some small meadows where wildflowers, wild raspberries, and wild orchids grow. The parcel of land also includes a stand of mature beeches along the right boundary line, beautiful to walk along and sit beneath at all times of the year, enjoying birdsong and stunning sunsets from beneath their broad canopies.

The woodland was planted in 2003 with predominantly native broadleaves such as ash, alder, gean, beech, oak, and whitebeam; as well as birch, willow, hazel, sycamore, hawthorn, and blackthorn. The young trees established well, and the majority have now been removed from their 1.2m planting tubes in order to help them thrive all the more. There are also groups of hybrid larch, planted to add greater species diversity. Aside from their elegance, these majestic stems contain valuable softwood timber and make a decent firewood when well seasoned.

There is wildlife in abundance within Hartfield woods. Deer abound, and keen hunters may be pleased to know that Sporting rights are included with the land sale. As well as deer there have been sightings of hares bounding among the tall grasses; bats, barn owls, badgers, and foxes can be seen on quiet nights, and the air is often filled with birdsong. If foraging is more your bag than hunting, then you'll be thrilled by the glut of raspberries, blackberries and assorted fungi that make their presence known from late summer through to autumn. The hazel trees by the front gate are now mature enough to bear fruit, and there is even a single brave apple tree on the upper half of the land. Fruit trees will grow well here if tended regularly – simply keep the deer away from them for a few years, giving them time to mature and establish, and to get their tender branches out of nibbling range.

Boundaries
There are no stock-fences currently adjacent to neighbouring farmland which might require joint maintenance. Such fences as exist around this plot adjoin either neighbouring woodland/wildland or public roadside. They are mainly to identify boundaries and are therefore largely redundant.
